Today’s topic is all about sleep. So, how do you get to sleep? It’s a conversation a lot of people have; I just want to give you three easy tips. I want to go into a little more detail with it. Everyone knows not to have a T.V. inside your bedroom. The reason why is back when we were cavemen we rose and slept with the Sun. So when the Sun comes up, we go out and forage to get some food. Come back in, Sun goes down, and we go to sleep. So from those ancient times, your hormone levels have been spiking all through the day based on the Sun. I want you guys to start learning to base your lifestyle with the Sun. Your body will have an easier time progressing through if you can.
Tip Number 1: Try to get your room as dark as possible. Get the TV out. Another thing that most of us do is try to read at night. But, instead of reading a book we read from a Kindle or Nook. That light stimulates your brain. Your brain tries to offset that hormone and it starts to wake you up. That’s why when you watch TV or when you start to read you might think to yourself “WOW, why am I still awake, I just read this whole book?” – you might want to start unwinding that habit and stop doing that. Try to stay away from the Kindle and start working towards a hard cover book. This is old school but is something that is needed if you want to break that cycle of the light.
Tip Number 2: Keep your room slightly chilled to the point where you want to wear a sweater or a blanket. Not too cold where you don’t want to get out of your bed but cold enough where you want to put a blanket or a sweater on. This is the comforting feeling that we have as children. We bundle up and feel nice and snug. That’s tip number two. Staying warm is key. It’s primitive thinking: keep warm. But don’t make it too cold because then you don’t want to get out of your bed. You want to be able to feel snug.
Tip Number 3: Routines are huge. Most people don’t realize this. As a child we start our children with routines. Most people think that as we grow, we grow out of this. But, that’s wrong. What you have to start recognizing is that you already have a nighttime routine, you just have to rediscover it. Those nights where you have a great night sleep, it’s because you did something specifically in the right order that you used to do in the past, and you get into old habits. They are habits for a reason and they don’t go away.
You have to figure out what you do at night. What is your nighttime routine when you get into bed? Is it reading a book? Is it meditating? Is it just going through your day quietly inside yourself? Or is it having a glass of warm milk? Whatever your routine is, just figure it out. Once you do that and follow it consistently, your body will have this routine all the time. Sleeping is key. If you are not sleeping properly, you are not healing properly. If you aren’t healing properly, you’re never going to live and move pain free physically, mentally and emotionally.
